What Do I Love About Calligraphy?

Stumbling upon modern calligraphy has been a blessing, and I wish I discovered it sooner! Here are 3 reasons (in no particular order) why I love calligraphy:

  1. A creative outlet

I never really considered myself a creative person. I can’t draw well, I don’t paint, and I have no interest in crocheting. I like structure, rules, and boundaries, but still want a way to exercise my underdeveloped creativity. Calligraphy is that outlet. Although modern calligraphy does not follow the same rules as other traditional calligraphy (e.g., Copperplate), there are still guidelines to follow. However even with those guidelines, there is room for style and experimentation, such as in the form of flourishes or bounce. Calligraphy seems to be that happy medium, so if you’re like me and want artistic expression but the thought of creating something from nothing is overwhelming, give calligraphy a try!

  2. Mindfulness

In calligraphy, each letter is made up of different thin upstrokes and thick downstrokes. In order to transition smoothly between each stroke, it is important to write with control and very s l o w l y. The amount of concentration and intention that goes into each letter makes calligraphy a great mindfulness activity. You need to be present. With everything going on in the world, calligraphy has proven to be an effective way for me to focus on the moment in order to let go of any anxieties that crop up during the day.

  3. Beautiful

Ever watch an Instagram reel or TikTok video of someone writing calligraphy? Mesmerizing, isn’t it? There is something innately beautiful about the art of calligraphy, not only in real time, but also in the final product. Calligraphy makes that birthday card just a little more elegant or that restaurant sign a little more stunning. Calligraphy is undeniably appealing to the eye. Why not fill our lives with more beautiful things?

Hopefully I have sparked your interest in calligraphy! I would like to use this blog space to share what I learn along my calligraphy/business journey and ideally inspire you to find your own creative path and to believe in your ability to accomplish whatever you set your mind to.
